Random Thoughts… Goddesses January 10, 2009

One has to understand that all are forms of DEVI or Shakti. In two main forms, both Parvati and Kali are Shakti. In relation to Shiva, Kali plays the opposite role from that of Parvati. It is Parvati or Gauri who brings Shiva within the sphere of domesticity and who, with her soft glances, urges him to moderate the destructive aspects of his tandava dance. Kali is Shiva’s ‘other’ wife, provoking him and encouraging him in his destructive form. This is required to complete the cycle of existence.

Why should one be scared of Mother. She is loving in both forms. Kali is widely worshipped in the eastern parts of India. That does not mean that there are bad people living in those parts. She is most fierce, inexorable killer and blind and has no consideration of any kind. She is conqueror of time. It is she who can destroy the universe. Being the destroyer of Chunda and Munda, she is only known as Chamundi. Other forms of Kali are Shamshan Kali (goddess of the cremation ground), Bhadra Kali, Ugra Chandi, Bhima Chandi, Sidheshvari, and Sheetla (the goddess of smallpox).

How we worship DEVI, and in which form, is up to us. It largely connects with our own psyche and to which form we relate to and feel comfortable with. To some the ferocious form of MAA Kaali is most beautiful and soothing. It depends on what we want from MAA. If we want protection, be it from diseases or enemies or anything else, we go to her Kali roops. If we are looking for her grace in married life, you may worship her as Gauri to bestow such qualities on you that help you to be a good wife. If you are a student or a learner, do the vandana of Maa Saraswati and ask for her divine grace, and if you want prosperity, you may call upon her Lakshmi Roop. Even as Mahalakshmi, she is ashtlakshmi with 8 roopas. Now if you have a specific problem, just like you go to a specialist doctor, you may seek a special grace as saubhagya lakshmi, or dhan lakshmi or bhog lakshmi (the ashtlaksmi forms). It all depends how you understand the basic principle behind their existence and what you want in life.
